Track Season Performances

For any stat hounds out there, I have posted links to the SBA Boys performance lists for this past season; the first takes you to a document file of season best performances by event and the second, at athletic.net, takes you to all performances. The girls performances will be coming soon. Also, I have been running into problems getting the second state track video uploaded but hope to get that fixed soon. The top ten list for the boys has been updated. We started working on the girls list this year; hopefully we can have that done in the next year or two. If you would like to know how you can help us with that, get ahold of Greg Pedersen or me. Have a great summer and look for any new posts.

The boys event will involve several top performers in the state. Kadoka Invitational Wrap

The SBA teams competed at the last regular season meet at Kadoka on Saturday, May 15. We had some rain in the morning and mostly calm and mostly cloudy conditions in the afternoon. The boys' team won five events on the day. Preston Burma (110 highs) and Caleb Crossman (300s) swept the hurdle events. Brad Bridgman won the high jump and Ethan McClain placed first in the 3200 run. The 4x800 relay hit a state meet qualifying standard with a time of 8:31.2, just edging out Wall in a great finish. Members of that unit were Caleb Crossman, Christian Svennes, Ethan McClain, and Cole McClain. On the girls' side the 4x800 team of Ann Wilken, Megan Burma, Andrea Beckwith, and Kalli Quicke finished first with a solid time of 10:45.8. Andrea Beckwith also won the 3200 run. Girls Win 281 Conference Track Title!
The SBA girls won the conference track meet in Huron on Tuesday, May 11. The Crusader girls scored 149 team points to 129 for second place James Valley Christian and 105 for Hitchcock-Tulare. They jumped out early with 23 points in the high jump. Emily Pedersen won the event in a jump-off with teammate Shanna Moreland. Finishing 4th was Jenna McCrea. The girls had a 2-3-4 finish in the 3200, with Andrea Beckwith, Megan Burma, and Ann Wilken. Kalli Quicke ran for the first time in a few weeks; she is recovering from a knee injury.

The boys' team finished 4th at the conference meet, finishing with 103 points. James Lee, Jake Moreland, Brady Brockel, and Jaden Brockel did not compete due to sickness and injury. Brad Bridgman won the high jump. Ethan McClain was second in both the 1600 and 800 meter runs, hitting state meet qualifying standards in both. His 1600 time of 4:33.9 is also currently second best in the Class B ranks; his 800 time was 2:03.1. The links below will take you to the meet results.

Howard Wood Dakota Relays

Ten of the boys' team members competed in the Howard Wood-Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls on April 30 and May 1. The weather was breezy, cool, and partly cloudy, really not bad all in all. In the individual events our guys competed against athletes from all classes, which made Brad Bridgman's 6th place in the high jump an impressive performance in less than ideal conditions on Saturday morning. In the relays we were class B and placed 5th in the 4x800 and 4x400 relays. All in all the guys performed well, especially given that two were missing. The 4x400 team consisting of Caleb Crossman, Ethan McClain, Cole McClain, and Cody Weiss hit a state qualifying standard of 3:37.2 (converted to HH). Caleb also hit a standard in the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.33, which will be converted to 42.1 for qualifying purposes. I have placed a link below to a page of results including our guys' performances along with the girls special event 800, listed below. Please note that the girls 800 race is listed at the top. Along with that, you can hit the link to all performances at the Dakota Relays site. We will at some point get some information out on the girls and guys that competed in Ipswich on Saturday, May 1.

For the track fan the Dakota Relays was a feast of outstanding competition. We witnessed what must be one of the greatest high school girls 800 performances ever witnessed. Laura Roesler, a senior at Fargo South High School in North Dakota ran a 2:05.76, and she was followed by two young ladies with times in the 2:08 range. In the girls AA 4x400 I timed Roesler in 52.23, just an outstanding time for a high school girl. She will run at the University of Oregon next year. We may never see performances quite like that again.

Howard Wood - Dakota Relays Participants

This coming Friday and Saturday, April 30 and May 1, some of the guys will be heading to the Dakota Relays at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls. The link will take you to a meet setup. There will be no girls participating there this year. However, Mr. Pedersen is inquiring about going to the Ipswich Relays on Saturday, so we will let you know what comes of that. We will also get information to you on the status of tomorrow's meet in Miller.

Kimball Invitational Results

We had a decent day for the Kimball Invitational on Thursday, April 22. It was in the 60s with SE wind at 10-15 MPH. Performances were mixed, as both boys' and girls' teams finished in fourth place out of fifteen teams. Brad Bridgman won the boys' high jump with a jump of 5' 11. After securing the win he bumped it up to 6' 4 1/4 in order to attempt a school record. He did not make it, but his first miss was close, and he was jumping with confidence, so maybe he can get that in the coming month. The 4x800 relay turned in a nice performance, running one of the top times in the state this year. Caleb Crossman ran the 800 meter distance for the first time in that event and did a very nice job. Ethan McClain hit a state meet qualifying standard in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:30.3. He is coming off some sickness and injury, so it was good to get back on the track and get some work in.
The girls' team has been hit with a couple of knee injuries. Despite that, they had some nice performances yesterday as well. Megan Burma brought her 1600 time down as did Tricia Wilken in the 300 hurdles. Thanks to all who have come out to support the teams. The links below will take you to the Kimball school web site pages where the results are posted.

Kimball Invitational Setup

We had a beautiful day for Clean-a-thon today and it sounds like tomorrow will be another nice day, with maybe a bit of a breeze picking up. We have won the boys' team title at Kimball the last two years, so maybe we can make it a three-peat. The links will take you to the meet setups. Hope to see many of you there.

Gettysburg Invitational Results

Saturday was a decent day for track, sunny and high temperature in the 60s, though the breeze from the SSE was a bit chilly. Absence and injury took their toll on the boys team as six team members did not compete. The girls were short on some events as well. First place performances for SBA were registered by Tricia Wilken in the 300 hurdles and Brad Bridgman in the long jump. Team points and medals were awarded up to six places at this meet. The link below will take you to the results page.

SBA Invitational - Thoughts

We completed another SBA Invitational yesterday. I always come away from this meet awed by the folks who help us pull this off. In addition to the student body, the faculty, staff, and other volunteers fill in to help get everything done, and all is done with a great spirit. To each one we say a big thank you. We could not do this each year without every one who plays a part. And for those who will be around to help next year, maybe we won't have to deal with 40 MPH winds! (It was a bad hair day for all, except Matt Van Zee :). Thanks again all.

SBA Invitational Results

Wind was the order of the day at the SBA Invitational in Huron on Tuesday, April 13, 2010. The temperature made it up into the upper 70s, and it was mostly clear, but high winds had a definite impact on performances. They gusted from 25-40 MPH, possibly higher in the afternoon. All-in-all it was a good day. The boys finisthed in 3rd place and the girls 6th. There are a few injuries on both boys' and girls' teams, but most are making good progress. I have posted the team scores and will get the individual results up in as soon as I can. Maybe we'll throw in a little video also.

SBA Invitational Meet Setup

Tomorrow (4-13-10) is the date for our meet, the SBA Invitational at Huron. Sounds like the weather should be OK. A few injury issues will limit a few athletes from competing, but we should have some good performances.

Central Dakota Invite Results

We had a beautiful day for a track meet on Thursday for the Central Dakota Invite in Miller. It was sunny, low 60s, calm - really nice. We had two state meet qualifying performances on the boys side. Brad Bridgman, who had already qualified for state with a jump of 5' 11", improved his high jump mark to 6' 2", putting him at third best on the school's all time top ten performance list. A medley team consisting of Cody Weiss, James Lee, Caleb Crossman, and Ethan McClain also hit a state qualifying standard, running a time of 3:47.6. On the girls' side, Megan Burma was a triple winner in the 4x800 relay and the 1600 and 3200 meter runs.
Here are the links to results for boys, girls, and team scores. I apologize for the look of the boys page; the format in Excel does not always look the greatest, but hopefully we can figure out how to make them look better. I have included a video of Brad Bridgman's jump of 6' 2".

Patriot Invitational

We competed at the Patriot Invitational in Redfield last Thursday, April 1. This meet was hosted by Hitchcock-Tulare and was our first track meet of the season. The day was very nice with highs near 60 degrees and mostly sunny with fairly light winds from the northeast. The athletes performed well for an early season meet; we were able to get an idea of what type of conditioning we possessed, and we have concluded that we have much upward potential. The boys placed 4th as a team and the girls placed 5th. You can find the girls individual results here and the guys results here. Team scores are below.

Dog Days of Track - March 2010

Dog days. We tend to use that reference in the face of long, hot summer days. But, it also carries with it the idea that we are not making any progress toward established goals. At this time in the track season the athletes put in many miles, lift a lot of weights, deal with the discomfort of re-apportioning their physical capacities, and yet they don't necessarily see tangible results, at least in terms of meet success. Thus, I have often referred to the month of March as the "Dog Days of Track". It is actually one of my favorite times of the year. While it is sometimes the case that the athletes feel as though they are working hard and gaining little return for their efforts, I envision the future days of reaping, the satisfaction of knowing that each step taken, every rep pursued, will have paid off. So the dog days are actually some of the greatest days in any SBA track season. Here is a little video for you to show it in action....and some commentary from the troops.
